Obsessive
Thoughts
Obsessions
tend to come in the form of involuntary thoughts, feeling or impulses
which take many forms.
They
are often difficult for the sufferer to control and include violent
or sexual thought processes and the fear of acting them out. Excessive
concern with routine and safety, often concerning the home or daily
rituals. Also concern with contamination or dirt. These are constant
and frequent thought processes that can dominate the mind and cause
distress.
Frequent
obsessions include: fears about dirt, germs and contamination, fears
of aggressive thoughts, sexual thoughts, fear that things are not
safe and so on. These are automatic and frequent responses which
the individual finds difficult to control.
Symptoms
include:
Checking
or counting rituals
Certain ‘magical beliefs’ or rituals that have to be
performed
Negative thoughts
Concern with hygiene, dirt and the possibility of contamination
Chronic insomnia
Persistent jealous thoughts
Compulsive
Behaviour
These
are the way a person reduces the anxiety they feel from an obsession.
This might include: excessive washing and cleaning, checking, over/comfort
eating, excessive gambling, drinking alcohol to excess, repeating
certain words & phrases, counting & touching objects, hoarding,
ritualistic behaviour, wearing only certain colours and many more.
The
main features of compulsions are that they are repetitive and stereotypical
actions that the person feels compelled to perform without conscious
thought. |
